Your Tailored Eyecare Experience

You’ll feel comfortable, at ease and able to discuss all aspects of your ocular health and visual needs in confidence with our team. And you’ll always be properly informed about any procedures or issues that may come up during your visit.

At Nixon & Shaw Opticians, we aim to give you the best possible eye care and the highest levels of considered advice and choice. That is why we have invested in OCT technology to take remarkable scans of your eyes.

We recommend an Advanced Eye Examination with OCT because seeing beneath the surface enables us to more accurately monitor the health of your eyes.

The OCT is like ultrasound, but uses light rather than sound waves to illustrate the different layers that make up the back of your eye. We also capture a 3-D cross section of the back of your eye in one sitting. This allows us to instantly diagnose a number of conditions. The scan is non-invasive, painless, simple and quick.

Furthermore, the software can automatically detect even the most subtle changes to the retina with every scan. This gives you an invaluable ongoing record of the health and condition of your eyes

Have an Advanced Eye Exam

You might think your eyes and vision are fine, but visiting your opticians for an advanced eye exam is the only way to really be sure. When it comes to common vision problems, some people don’t realize they could actually see more clearly, by being prescribed the correct glasses or contact lenses. In addition, many common eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration often have no warning signs, only being detected when they are prevalent. A detailed eye exam is the only way to detect these diseases in their early stages

Know Your Family's Eye Health History

Do any family members wear glasses? Any family history of Glaucoma? It’s great to know if anyone has been diagnosed with a disease or condition, since many are hereditary. This will help us tune your eyecare needs

Simple Tips for Healthy Eyes

There are many things you can do to keep your eyes healthy and make sure you are seeing clearly. Follow the tips below to help:

Eat Right For Sight

A balanced, varied diet, particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens is important for keeping your eyes healthy. Research has also shown there are eye health benefits from eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon

Quit Smoking

Smoking is as bad for your eyes as it is for the rest of your body. Research has linked smoking to an increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataract, and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to blindness

Wear Protective Eyewear

Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home, such as DIY. Protective eyewear are specially designed to provide the correct protection for a certain activity. Most protective eyewear lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is 10 times stronger than other plastics

Keep Out The UV

Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, but their most important job is to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Our sunglasses come with UVA and UVB filters. Wearing a sunhat is also a good idea to keep the UV away.

Use A Screen? Stick To This Rule

We spend so much time on tablets, computers and mobile devices, we actually blink far less and our eyes will get fatigued. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. This can help reduce eyestrain.

Make sure kids spend time outdoors

We know kids are spending more time inside with increased social screen time than ever before. Recent research though showed that spending time outdoors may reduce the risk of myopia and it's progression. Don't forget your sunspecs though! Visit out our Myopia page for more information
